«It was important to me to find a name for my studio that sounded fresh, was a little playful and aroused curiosity. Okapi fascinated me on an onomatopoeic level, and I began to research it.»
OKAPI studio stands for creative empowerment.
A space dedicated to creative activity, visual connections and aesthetic exploration.
OKAPI is an acronym for five qualities that characterise the spirit of the studio –
open minded, creative, agile, passionate, inspiring.
Okapi (Okapia johnstoni) is also the name of a fascinating, little-studied animal native to the dense rainforests of the Congo – and, like creativity, it was only discovered in the 20th century.
Okapis are shy, stubborn and communicate via infrasound – frequencies that are inaudible to us humans. Like ideas that quietly take shape deep beneath the surface.
The okapi combines seemingly unrelated characteristics. At first glance, with its striking black and white striped legs, large ears and long neck, it looks like a mixture of a zebra, a doe and a giraffe – reminiscent of a bizarre unicorn – like a symbol of the unusual, the hidden, the creative in its wild form.
And that is exactly what OKAPI studio is:
a space for diversity, a change of perspective and applied lateral thinking.
